It's New Year's Eve and House Tricks estate agents are hosting an open viewing in an up-market apartment when an incompetent bank robber rushes in and politely takes everyone hostage. For Anna-Lena and Roger, busy buying-up apartments to fill the hole in their marriage, it's something else to talk about. For Julia and Ro, panicky parents-to-be, it's yet another worry. Lonely bank manager Zara only came here for the view. While 87-year-old grandmother Estelle seems rather pleased by the company . . . As the police gather outside, the anxious strangers huddled within try to make the best of a very sticky situation - but could it be that they have a whole lot more in common than meets the eye?

Like every relationship, this book needs you to be patient with it in the beginning. It is all heart and no cliches.

Great book with good character depth.

There's so much to like in this book. It's a beautiful book, you'll feel happy, sad and wholesome while reading and after reading it. A nice take on the different situations faced by people all the time with no body knowing what's actually happening with their life. Highly recommended. Go for it, you'll not be disappointed.

Changes your perspective

I take a long time like a month to finish the books of this genre but I think that’s what this kind of books need. The Time. All the time you can give it to sink in every word of every sentence. Now after reading this, I am confused is it better than A Man Called Ove. IDK honestly and I don’t care. This is just a brilliant book. A page (#365) gave me shivers, goosebumps that continued for several pages so for the first time in my reading journey I marked a page. But of course to feel what I felt you need to read it 😊😊. So go read it.

Book Review: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Fredrik Backman’s Anxious People is a remarkable novel that blends humor, heart, and unexpected twists in a story about human connection. Through multiple perspectives, the novel follows a group of strangers who find themselves in a bizarre hostage situation, each carrying their own personal burdens. Backman masterfully explores complex themes like mental health, loneliness, and generational divides in a way that feels both light-hearted and deeply moving.

The beauty of Anxious People lies in its ability to tackle heavy subjects with humor and empathy. While the characters face real-life struggles—some more visible than others—Backman’s quirky and compassionate writing brings them to life in a way that’s both relatable and comforting. Despite its seemingly simple premise, the story is full of surprises, constantly pulling the reader in different directions and leaving you guessing what will happen next.

What makes this book stand out is its emotional depth. It’s easy to laugh at the absurdity of the situation, but the novel also gives space for reflection on the deeper, often hidden struggles we all face. It’s a poignant reminder that everyone is dealing with something—and a small act of kindness can sometimes make all the difference.

Anxious People is an uplifting, thoughtful read that leaves you both shaken and inspired. It feels like reaching the top of a mountain, taking in the view, and finally understanding the complexity of life’s most important connections. A perfect blend of humor and introspection, this is a book that will stay with you long after you’ve finished it.
